Wondering what’s wrong with your HVAC unit? It could be your AC drain line.

The HVAC experts at Freedom Air are here to make you aware of the 5 most common signs your AC drain line is clogged. If you are having problems with your HVAC unit, you need to read this blog!

What is an AC drain line?

Your HVAC unit not only cools your home, it manages its humidity too. The evaporator coil removes moisture from your home’s air and turns it into water. This water drains into a pan in your unit, then exits your unit via the drain line. The drain line is typically a PVC pipe. The water that trickles out of it typically flows onto the ground outside. Overtime dirt, goo, gunk, rust, microbes, and algae clog the drain line. This will prevent water from draining out of the evaporator coil.

Signs Your AC Drain Line Is Clogged

The following are the 5 most common signs your AC drain line is clogged.

1. Standing Water

The most obvious sign that your AC drain line is clogged is standing water around your outdoor unit. When the drain line is clogged, water will pool around the unit. If you notice standing water around your HVAC unit, monitor it for a few days to be sure that the leak is from the HVAC unit. If it is, call in an HVAC professional as soon as possible.

2. Full Condensate Pan

Typically, HVAC units have a condensate or drainage pan designed to collect moisture in case of a drain line clog. When the condensate pan is full, it indicates that the drain line is not functioning.

3. Water Damage

In serious cases of drain line blockage, water damage can occur to your home. When a drain line is seriously clogged for an extended period of time, the HVAC unit will stop working. When this happens, your home will not be dehumidified. This will allow moisture to collect and could lead to water damage on floors, walls, and ceilings.

4. Leaking Water

When a drain line is blocked, water collects behind it, and eventually overflows. If your HVAC unit is leaking, it is likely the fault of a clogged drain line.

5. Moldy Odor

There are several potential sources of musty odors in the home. If you have inspected your home for leaks, water damage, and mold growth, and have yet to find the source of the smell, it’s likely the fault of a clogged drain line. When moisture cannot drain to the outside, it collects in the unit, causing mold growth. This mold then travels through your AC unit and is carried throughout your home.
