Well, it’s here. The cold weather has returned after a long vacation, and it’s made its presence known. Maybe it will be around for a while, but seeing as how we’re in Florida, it will probably be gone before we know it. While it’s sticking around, though, we need to make sure our furnaces are in working order.
They keep us and our families warm, and without them we’d be in a pickle. That’s why it’s so important to make sure furnaces are operational and worked as intended, and it’s why troubleshooting your furnace can be intimidating. We’ve got a few ways to try and fix a handful of common problems you might encounter.
Furnace Isn’t Heating Enough of Your Home
You can brush off most furnace-related problems, or you can at least ignore them for a bit before they get too annoying to put off any longer. However, there’s one that is nearly impossible to avoid. When your furnace isn’t heating your home correctly, something has to be done.
Unfortunately, there isn’t one obvious culprit at fault here. It can be the result of any number of things, but there are a few that tend to be more common.
- Check your filter. A clogged filter will make it harder for your furnace to transfer heat, and an incorrectly sized filter leads to equally problematic issues like restricting airflow.
- Your registers might be closed! This presents similar issues to a wrong air filter – it prevents the air from circulating correctly.
Loud Noises Coming from the Furnace
Crashes, squeals, bangs and wheezes coming from the furnace are never good signs, and they’re generally a sure sign that you need to have your unit inspected.
Because there is such a wide range of noises, it’s tough to pin down what exactly is going on. They could be because your blower motor is loose, your ducts are leaky, your blower wheel has gotten jarred out of place, or anything in-between.
If you encounter a noise coming from your furnace, it’s best to call a professional. However, if you’ve pinpointed where the noise is originating, then you can at least have an idea of what needs fixing. Whether that’s mounting a loose panel, tightening bolts, or lubricating some parts, you can take care of it.
Incorrect Temperature
Sometimes, all the parts are working as they were intended to, but the temperature still isn’t right. One of the more common reasons for this, we’ve come to find out, is because the thermostat is actually at fault.
When a thermostat malfunctions, it sends the wrong signals to the furnace – and as a result, the furnace is just doing what the thermostat tells it to do. If your thermostat can’t properly gauge the temperature, then it won’t be able to tell when the furnace has raised the temperature high enough.
If everything checks out with your furnace, take a look at your thermostat!
