Every now and then, we’ve all got to deal with the inevitable break or malfunction of some important mechanical component of our home. They’re irritating, annoying and a nuisance to deal with, and that generally makes for an unpleasant call to the service company. You’re already being forced to schedule an appointment for something you never wanted to happen in the first place, and to top it all off, you’re going to have to pay for it. It’s just an all-around experience we try to avoid as much as possible.
However, when the technician does come pay a visit to your home, you’ve got an opportunity in front of you to make sure you’re not going to be on the hook for anything else. The technician is – well, at least he should be – knowledgeable about the various systems keeping you comfortable, so it’s a good time to ask whatever questions you may have. That said, not everyone knows what to ask in the moment – like we said, it’s perfectly understandable to be grumpy while talking to a technician, so you may not have everything you wanted to know at the ready.
Let Freedom Air & Heat walk you through a few questions that might be good for you to ask your technician when he visits your home. You may end up saving money, both in the immediate future and down the road!
How Often Does My System Need Maintenance?
Generally, it’s good to have your HVAC system maintained twice a year. The AC component should be serviced in the spring, right before the summer heat hits and you start blasting cool air day in and day out. A second servicing in the fall, this one for your furnace, is recommended too, so you’ll be prepared for the chillier months. However, this schedule doesn’t always apply for every system, so it’s good to ask your technician if that differs at all for your particular situation.
What Should I Do if Something Fails Unexpectedly?
When disaster strikes and you notice something has stopped working, time is of the essence. The minutes you spend googling solutions or calling people who may or may not be able to identify what has gone awry can be costly, so take advantage of the time you have with your HVAC tech and ask him what your immediate steps need to be if you encounter a perilous situation.
What Is and Isn’t Included in a Quote?
This one’s just prudent. Not all HVAC companies are cut from the same cloth. Some will nickel-and-dime you to wring every possible profit they can squeeze out of their appointment, so taking the time to have them describe what exactly goes in to every portion of your quote can help you catch any slip-ups.
What’s Included in Maintenance?
It’s good to know what the HVAC technician is doing when he services your system. Having him explain all the points of his inspection will help you be informed and understand how an important part of your home functions.
Does Everything Sound Okay?
If you notice sounds coming from the components of your HVAC system, you can describe what you’re hearing and ask your technician if they’re things you can ignore. If they are, then great! However, if they’re evidence that something might be wrong, then you can catch them before the problem exacerbates.
Now you’re equipped with a couple of handy questions to ask your HVAC technician whenever you’ve got to schedule an appointment. This doesn’t cover everything you’ll ever need to ask, obviously, but they’ll allow you to be more informed about how your HVAC system works. Want to talk to an HVAC technician in person?
