On the day of Thanksgiving all you want to think about is food, family and friends. The last thing you want on your mind is a plumbing problem, caused by something you could have easily prevented earlier on. 1. Toilet Leaks
We know you don’t want any toilet troubles putting a damper on your Thanksgiving. That is why, if you notice any toilet leaks you should tackle them head on. Here are some common causes behind toilet leaks
- Flapper Problems
The flapper is the seal between the toilet bowl and tank. When you flush the toilet, the flapper lifts and releases water into the bowl. However, if your flapper is deteriorated or old, water might be leaking into your bowl. Get a new flapper from your nearest home improvement store to stop this leak.
- Wax Ring Troubles
If water is leaking at the base of your toilet, the wax ring below the toilet horn may have worn out. To fix this, you can call a plumber or give it a shot yourself!
- Water Level Issues
If your toilet continues to leak, the water level set on your float might be set too high. If the float level is set too high, water might go into the overfill tube and waste away unnecessarily. Simply set the float a little lower.
2. Dishwasher Clogs
You don’t want your dishwasher clogging when washing the dishes after your Thanksgiving meal. The dishwasher will most likely be the most used appliance that day, so you need it in great shape. To prevent your dishwasher from clogging, make it a habit of throwing food items in the trash before you wash the dishes. Items like coffee grounds, celery, egg shells, grease and potato peels should not be going down your dishwasher! In addition, use cold water to drain away any items in the dishwasher, as cold water clears away your drain easily.
3. Loose Showerhead
If you have guests staying over, they might use your shower a couple times. You don’t want your shower causing any troubles for them. That’s why you should make sure your showerhead has been tightened properly so it doesn’t cause any leaks. Tighten the showerhead to the stem and use some Teflon tape for extra security!
4. Clear Out Shower Drains
If there is any hair or soap scum clogging your shower drain, be sure to clear it out. You can use a gloved hand or the end of a metal hanger. Simply shape the end into a hook, remove the stopper and fish out anything clogging the drain. A clogged shower drain is not the best way to impress your guests.
