Sure, summer isn’t going to be around for much longer (or we hope it won’t, at least), but heat and humidity aren’t going away any time soon. Here in east Florida, the air is pretty much always muggy and wet, so your AC doesn’t get much of a break. Even when the calendar flips to September, your reliable HVAC unit will keep chugging along.

And because it has to keep working, it needs plenty of care to make sure the cold air you welcome so eagerly doesn’t stop blowing. To keep your AC performing well during the latter part of the year, we recommend rolling up your sleeves and taking care of some simple tasks around the house.

Follow along while Freedom Air & Heat walks you through a few tips and tricks that will give you a leg up in extending the life of your HVAC unit. These tips will also save you some extra hard-earned money along the way! For more serious or complicated procedures, though, drop us a line!

First, the Filter

Arguably the most effective method of optimizing your HVAC unit is also the easiest. Changing your air filter is recommended every month or so, depending on how strong of a model you purchase. The improvement a newly installed filter can have is jaw-dropping.

Forgetting to change the filter will cause buildup from undesirable dust and contaminants. This buildup causes your HVAC unit to work even harder to achieve your ideal temperature.

Seal Windows and Doors

The goal during hotter periods of weather is to cool your home’s interior, while making sure the cold air doesn’t escape. If you’ve had your home for a while and haven’t upgraded your doors and windows, you could be losing a lot of cool air without even realizing it.

Go back and re-seal them to trap a lot of the valuable air, minimizing the amount of energy you’ll have to use to cool your home.

Limit Use of Indoor Heating Conduits

An underrated way of lowering the level of indoor heat is by cutting back on oven or stove usage. These appliances produce lots of heat, obviously, and all that hot air is going to affect your HVAC unit’s reading of the temperature level.

Instead, try to cook outside with the grill more often!

Remove Excess Debris

The other, more ignored part of your AC is the outdoor condenser. It’s just as vital as the complicated parts running through your home’s interior. If it isn’t properly cleaned and maintained, then your air flow will suffer.

All you need to do is see if there are any stray branches, wayward vines or pieces of trash or debris stuck in the condenser. Clear them out, because the outdoor unit needs as much room as possible to utilize the air right around it.

Taking care of your HVAC unit isn’t something that requires a lot of technical know-how for the most part. You can increase the efficiency of its performance in no time, and those few minutes you took out of your day to attend to it will pay dividends in the form of savings on your energy bills!

Of course, for the more complex mechanical procedures, it’s better to let a professional handle it. That’s where Freedom Air & Heat comes in. Our technicians are equipped to identify and solve all your HVAC-related problems, and we’ll get them fixed correctly the first time.
